Notes

Leda was mother of Helen of Troy (and Castor and Pollux). Pietà is a name for a statue of Mother Mary

These solemn, mysterious presences are compared with bringers of beauty (Helen) and love (Christ). Needle-like envy of Plath for these trees able to produce and be lauded for it, unlike her difficulties she experienced as a mother and female artist.
